The yellow buckeye (Aesculus flava) is a low-maintenance, attractive shade tree with showy flowers and ecological value. It thrives in partial sun to full shade and rich, medium moist, and slightly acidic soils.
The trumpet-like flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The large seeds look a lot like chestnuts– but unlike chestnuts, buckeye seeds are toxic. That being said, this tree was historically utilized for food by Native Americans, who devised methods to leach out the toxic saponins and extract edible starch from the nuts.
These seedlings are the offspring of mature Yellow Buckeye trees in Princeton, NJ. Note that because there are other species of buckeye present in that area, there is a slight chance that some of the seedlings could be natural hybrids with Aesculus pavia or Aesculus glabra (both of which are also native to the Eastern US).
