The Sour Orange (Citrus aurantium), also called Bitter Orange or Seville Orange, originates in Southeast Asia. It is used to make essential oil, foods, drinks, and pharmaceuticals. It is prized for making marmalade due to its higher pectin content than the sweet orange.
Citrus aurantium is also planted as an ornamental tree, and it has become somewhat naturalized in the state of Florida. Its invasive potential is low compared to its shrubbier, spikier counterpart Trifoliate Orange (Poncirus trifoliata) which is also known as bitter orange.
Citrus aurantium is a hybrid—just like the sweet orange, Citrus sinensis. Both originate as hybrids of the largest citrus fruit, the pomelo, with a wild mandarin.
