Also known as the Eastern Prickly Pear, Opuntia humifusa is a low-growing perennial cactus hardy to zone 4. The whole plant is edible and its fruits are sweet, though small and seedy. It resists deer and other herbivores thanks to its characteristic spines. Found along the coast, this species thrives in poor, sandy, dry soil, and even tolerates salt. It makes a unique and remarkable ground cover in areas where other plants don’t thrive.
