The eastern sand cherry, Prunus pumila, is a unique wild cherry. The plant takes on the form of a small shrub, and the fruits are relatively large and fleshy compared to other wild cherries. Native to dunes and prairies, the sand cherry is naturally adapted to poor soil and dry, well-drained conditions. It tolerates cold, wind, and drought. The plant’s extensive root system helps to stabilize soil and prevent erosion. The fruit can be used to make jams, jellies, and wine. Aside from its fruit, the Eastern Sand Cherry also brings interesting foliage and impressive blooms to marginal areas.

Grown from seed from Michigan.
