Fragaria virginiana is also known as the Virginia strawberry or wild strawberry. It is a low-growing perennial that creeps along the ground. The berries are tiny, but they are intensely sweet and far more flavorful than domestic strawberries. It grows best in slightly acidic to neutral soil. Compared to eastern North America’s other wild strawberry, Fragaria vesca (the woodland strawberry), Fragaria virginiana performs better in full sun and tolerates slightly drier conditions. These plants were grown from seed acquired from Ontario.
