Known for its delicious and filling nuts sought after by wildlife and humans, the Chinese Chestnut is often planted in North America as an alternative to the American chestnut which was effectively wiped out by chestnut blight in the early 20th century. The Chinese chestnut has a wide, low-branching growth pattern with a rounded crown providing excellent shade and nut production. The seedlings grow fast and can begin producing nuts in as little as 5 years. To ensure pollination, plant at least 2 seedlings.
Chestnuts thrive in a variety of soil types and prefer an acidic pH.
