This American/Chinese Chestnut Hybrid (Castanea dentata x mollissima) is highly resistant to the chestnut blight that effectively wiped out American chestnuts in the early 20th century. It combines traits of both American and Chinese chestnut trees. The seedlings generally inherit the shorter and more branched structure of the Chinese chestnut, with slightly larger and sweeter nuts from the American chestnut. The seedlings grow fast and can begin producing nuts in as little as 5 years. To ensure pollination, plant at least 2 seedlings.
Chestnuts thrive in a variety of soil types and prefer an acidic pH.
