The Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is native to central and eastern North America. It is valued for its heavy, dark, easily worked wood, and for its distinctively flavored nuts. The tree can be tapped in spring for sweet sap. The spongy nut hulls can also be used to make dyes or stains ranging from brown to black, and the tannins present in the hulls act as a natural dye fixative. The ground nutshells are used commercially as an abrasive. As a native tree that provides habitat and food for wildlife as well as numerous resources for humans, the versatility of the black walnut is exceptional.
