The pawpaw (Asimina triloba), often called North America’s “forgotten” or “secret” fruit, has seen a recent resurgence in popularity. As the largest edible fruit native to North America, it almost looks tropical– and most of it closest relatives (cherimoya, soursop) are tropical. The pawpaw, however, is hardy to zone 4 and found growing wild throughout most of the eastern United States. The pawpaw is a small tree with a mature height of 15 to 30 feet, featuring very large leaves that turn bright yellow in fall as well as unusual dark maroon flowers in spring.
These seedlings were grown from large, tasty fruit of several different cultivars grown in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Pawpaw trees start bearing fruit about 5-8 years after planting. *At least 2 trees are required to pollinate and produce fruit.*
