Aronia melanocarpa, also called black chokeberry, is a shrub in the rose family native the eastern U.S. and Canada. Its antioxidant-rich dark purple fruit is used to make jams, jellies, and beverages. The fruit has been introduced to Europe where it is grown as a commercial crop. Aronia melanocarpa can self-pollinate, so only one plant is needed to produce fruit. The shrub also sports attractive white flowers in spring and bright red-orange foliage in fall.
