The sugar maple (Acer saccharum), the famous source of maple syrup, is native the northeast and midwest United States and southern Canada. It grows 60 to 100 feet tall. Its stately growth habit is characterized by a straight trunk and teardrop shaped crown. The attractive foliage turns orange to red in Fall.
Sugar maples can tolerate significant shade, and prefer moist, rich, well-drained soil. They require even moisture and are sensitive to flooding and drought.
These seedlings were field-grown from seeds collected in Princeton, NJ and Lambertville, NJ.
