The silver maple (Acer saccharinum) is a fast-growing maple native to Eastern North America, adaptable to an exceptionally wide range of conditions.
Silver maple was once a popular street tree. Because of their aggressive root growth and short life span (about 100 years), silver maples have become maligned in urban landscaping– but despite its reputation, the silver maple is an attractive tree and its vigorous growth has the potential to be one of its best features. This species is best utilized to rapidly establish tree cover in open spaces, tolerating poor and compacted soil, flooding, drought, sun, shade, and more. It acts as a pioneer species in bottomlands, floodplains, and near bodies of water, and is an excellent choice for erosion control.
These seedlings were grown in air-pruning beds from seeds collected in East Windsor, NJ.
