Maclura pomifera, also known as Osage orange or hedge-apple, originates in the south-central United States but is now widely distributed throughout the eastern US due to its utility as a living fence. The medium-sized, spiny trees grow together into a dense hedge.

Osage orange tolerates almost any soil: its growth is hindered only by extremely poor and sandy soil. Its preferred pH is neutral to slightly alkaline, but it can tolerate a wide range from 5.0 to 8.0. The wood is incredibly dense, hard, and rot resistant, with a yellowish color. It is known as a durable choice for fence posts. Osage orange also produces the hottest-burning firewood in North America. It should be burned with caution, especially indoors, as it can cause massive flames and sparks and dangerously overheat stoves.
