Celtis occidentalis, native throughout much of the Eastern US, is a popular urban shade tree that also produces edible fruit. The flesh of the fruits is thin and dry when ripe, but they are sweet and have an excellent flavor resembling dates. They contain carbohydrates, protein, and fat, and can be made into a beverage or a powder.
The tree reaches 40 to 60 feet tall and tolerates wind, drought, poor soil, and pollution.
