The American bladdernut (Staphylea trifolia) is a fast-growing deciduous shrub native to much of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. It is easily recognized by its inflated papery seed capsules visible in late Summer, Fall, and Winter. In early Spring it produces clusters of bell-shaped white flowers. The seeds are edible raw or cooked and have a nutty flavor.
It is a woodland understory plant, often found in moist bottomlands and near waterways. It can tolerate a wide variety of soil textures, but prefers rich soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH and grows best in shade.
These seedlings were field-grown from seeds collected in Princeton, NJ.
