Cornus florida is native throughout most of the eastern united states. It is a very popular ornamental tree, appreciate for its graceful branching stucture, large and showy spring flowers, and vibrant deep red to purple fall foliage accompanied by red fruits that attract local birds. Cornus florida reaches a mature height of 15 to 30 feet, and its width often equals its height. Its small size makes it a popular choice for planting near buildings, patios, and other structures. In the wild it grows in the understory of forests, and it prefers a mix of sun and shade. Moist, rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil is preferred.
